January Favourites

Some old favourites along with a couple of newcomers! I have spoken so much about MAC Studio Sculpt and Benefits Watts Up so I won't go on about them too much! The MAC foundation is amazing coverage with great lasting power and the highlighter gives a gorgeous glow that can be built up for a more dramatic highlight or used subtly for the daytime. Sticking with make-up, I've been loving the Bobbi Brown corrector, I wake up at 5am everyday for work so I always have dark circles under my eyes and this covers them up so well. It doesn't crease or look cakey and really helps me to look a lot more awake than I feel!

Onto skincare and body; first up is my beloved Xen-Tan. I have really got back into tanning, I'm trying to keep in up at least once a week. Even though this is called Dark Lotion Absolute Luxe, it isn't actually thaaat dark, it looks really natural but if you do it twice a week you can build it up to a darker colour which is what I'm aiming for at the moment. Another body(?) product is the L'Occitane Fleur Cherie perfume, I am rubbish at describing scents so I'm just going to put what it says on the website 'parkling, floral fragrance with a soft woody trail', who really knows what that means so go give it a sniff in a shop! But hurry cause it's limited edition!

Finally in my favourites this month is the Origins Ginzing Moisturiser. I'm really bad at trying new skincare as I always convince myself I'll react badly to it and it will break me out, even though I don't have particularly sensitive skin -hypochondriac! But I'm so glad I gave this a go, it is such a lovely moisturiser. Firstly it smells gorgeous but also it hydrates the skin so well without being overly thick. It claims to be energy boosting which is definitely what I need with all these early mornings!

What products have you been loving this month?

Sunday Post | Nails, Tan & Faves

This weeks favourites;
Read : Kimi and Me

This week has been the first time I've faked tanned in months, I've found with dark hair that I need a bit more colour in me so I don't look too washed out! My favourite is the Xen Tan Dark Lotion Absolute Luxe - pricey but so much better than the cheaper alternatives. The colour lasts for a week and it doesn't go patchy at all. The colour is also perfect, it is very green based rather than red so it is more of an olive toned tan rather than orange which makes it look much more natural.

I've also been loving Essie nail polishes, as you may know if you read my Ode To Essie post. My two favourites at the moment are Lapiz of Luxury and Warm & Toasty Turtleneck.

Hope you've had a good weekend!

Haircare Routine

Since dying my hair brown I've been trying to look after it a bit more. I want to make the colour last for as long as possible and take advantage of the lack of bleach in my hair to help it to grow. I've always had a really sensitive scalp but I'm not sure what triggers it, I ended up using Head & Shoulders which is awful for your hair and really strips colour out. I tried the L'Oreal no sulphate lines but they still really irritated my head so I have no idea what is causing it. But I noticed that my scalp was fine after going to Toni & Guy and they use Label M products so I bought a mini of the Label M Colour Stay Shampoo to try out and I'm so happy to say that it doesn't irritate my scalp at all! My hair feels really clean after using this and hopefully it will help the colour stay. Even though the L'Oreal shampoos didn't agree with me, I carried on using the EverRiche Conditioner and I absolutely love it. It is really nourishing without weighing my hair down and best thing of all - it's so affordable!

I'm super lazy when it comes to styling and extra products so currently there are 3 that I'm trying to make myself use. I was completely sold on the concept of the Label M Protein Spray when I was getting my hair done, it's supposed to reduce colour fade and damage by acting as a hair protectant and evening out the pores in your hair - kind of like a primer does on your face. I then use the John Frieda Full Repair Oil Elixir which is a lovely lightweight oil, it can be used on damp or dry hair but I tend to use it on damp hair as I'm always scared of overloading dry hair with oil. I'm not sure of the long term effects of either of those products as I've only been using them for a few weeks - but I'll let you know. Finally is the Toni & Guy Salt Spray which I use to give my hair some texture, it's such an easy product to use to give hair that messy look.

Even though I'm happy with my current haircare routine, I still want to try some Oribe products, I've heard such good reviews from other bloggers. Any recommendations?

An Ode To Essie

I always used to think Essie was pretty expensive for a nail varnish you could buy in a drug store and when I bought my first one I was impressed but not completely sold. However I've completely changed my mind now. Essie quite often do really great sets, the six minis in the photo were from two Christmas sets. This is a great way to get more nail polishes for your money, and who uses the full size before they go gloomy anyway? I also got Bahama Mama and Chinchilly in a set which saved me about £3. So I've only actually bought Lapiz of Luxury (the blue) and Warm and Toasty Turtleneck (the purple) on their own. Individual polishes come in at £7.99 from Boots and the sets are £12.99.

The thing that makes these nail polishes worth it is the lasting power and the colour range. These definitely last longer than most nail polishes on me, they can last up to a week! The colour range is something you just don't see from other brands in Boots, I hope to slowly build up my collection - I'm currently eyeing up the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star duo

What do you think of Essie polishes? Worth the extra few pounds?

London | 18/1/14

Another weekend, another trip to London. I met up with some of my uni friends which was amazing, it made me really miss being a student! I really want to move to London now, but my job ties me to the Midlands until September, but hopefully after that I can make the move!

Hope you've all had a good weekend :)

The Lipstick Tag

I decided to do the lipstick tag after seeing Jennie from sailboat do it on her blog!

1. How many lipsticks do you own?
About 25-30, this is definitely not as many as some people who have done this tag but it's still quite a collection!!

2. What was the first lipstick you owned?
I think it was one from Avon, I'm pretty sure it was one of those concealer lip colours that I begged and begged my mum to buy me! It looked absolutely awful but I loved it so much.

3. What is your favourite lipstick brand?
I would have to go for Rimmel or MAC. I love the formulas of both, obviously Rimmel is much more affordable but MAC has a huge array of colours.

4. What is your most worn lipstick?
At the moment it is Soap and Glory Sexy Mother Pucker in Nudist but overall I think it is MAC Hue, which I've recently repurchased!

5. What is your favourite finish?
I like quite light formulas as I get quite dry lips so I don't want it to cling to dry patches. But on weekends or evenings out when I want to rock a bold lip I like a matte formula because I don't want to worry about top ups or it smudging.

6. What was the last lipstick you bought?
A Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip perfector, but I'm not sure that counts. So actual lipstick is probably MAC Rebel.

7. How many lip products do you currently have in your bag?
Only 4, which I'm quite impressed with! Sometimes I can have up to six or seven!

8. What is your favourite red lip colour?
I'm not huge on red lips, I prefer a more berry colour like Rimmel 107, however my favourite true red is L'Oreal Color Riche in 461.

9. How do you store your lipsticks?
I don't have any storage at the moment so they are all currently stored in a make-up bag, I definitely want to invest in some pretty storage but I don't have much space for my make-up so it's a working progress!

10. Which lipsticks are you currently lusting after?
I want to buy a Dior lipstick, I don't have any particular one in mind I just love the packaging!! I also love my Chanel Boy lipstick so would love to invest in a few more Chanel colours.

I tag Sophia, Chelsea and Tash and anyone else who wants to do it! Link me in the comments if you've done this on your blog :)

Day Off Essentials

I don't get the typical weekend off that most people get, I get one day off in the week and then every Sunday. I actually don't really mind, it's a nice mid-week break! But most other people are at work so there isn't always a lot to do. So instead of a Sunday pamper and relax, I do it whenever my day off happens to be - which is today!

I don't set any alarms but because I have to get up at 5am on work days I usually wake up no later than 8. Today I treated myself to a McDonalds breakfast, naughty!! I usually try to tidy and clean my flat, then finally drag myself into the shower at about noon. While I'm in the shower I use a hair mask as I'm not in a rush so can take my time, my current favourite is the L'Oreal Ever Riche, it leaves my hair feeling super soft. Once I'm out the shower I like to give my skin a treat, I use the Lush Bubblegum Lip scrub and Origins Clear Improvement mask before applying my normal skincare (post coming soon on that!).

Then I'll sit down and relax. Today I've been reading Company and watching the OC. I've also been thinking of blogpost ideas and jotting them all down in this really cute 'Bits and Bobs' notebook. I'll also be painting my nails later and I've chosen to go for Essie Chinchilly which is a gorgeous muted grey.

What are your day off essentials?

Life Lately

I decided to try to copy Claire's nails from this vlog, they didn't turn out quite as good but I'm still pretty impressed! Most of the polishes were from Fearne's collection which I got for Christmas and they are really good!

Still getting used to being a brunette!

Moving to the Dark Side..

I have contemplated going brunette for almost a year now, and today I finally took the plunge! I am absolutely in love with the colour. I went to Toni & Guy in Leicester and the colour was done by Ricky who was absolutely amazing. I wasn't too sure what kind of brown I wanted and he gave me loads of advice and in the end I told him he could decide cause I could tell he'd pick well! It's quite a warm brown as I have a lot of warm tones in my hair naturally so he thought it would suit me better and I think he's right, the colour doesn't wash me out at all which is what I was worried about when going brunette. I'm so happy I was finally brave enough to dye it!

Let me know what you think!

2013 | Highs & Lows

I've done a blog post all about Aztec Mess in 2013, so now it's time for what I got up to in 2013!

Let's start with the good! :) I'm going to include some photos of some amazing times I had this year :) Follow me on instagram: aztecmess

The best thing about this year was going on holiday with my boyfriend, we went with all my family and I had the best time. We went after our exams had finished so it was amazing to completely relax for 2 weeks and not think about anything we had to do!

Towards the end of this year there have been lots of trips to London to visit my boyfriend, even though living apart isn't great I am loving being able to spend time in London!

After my exams finished in Manchester me and all my friends took full advantage of the gorgeous weather and sat outside our house with cider and wine. I'd do anything to re-live those days with absolutely nothing to do!

Last New Years I was lucky enough to spend in Paris! My friend was living there on here year abroad so I took full advantage, you can read my post on it here.

I was lucky enough to attend quite a few blogger events while I was still in Manchester, including the Benefit Fake Up event. It was so nice to meet other bloggers and integrate more into the blogging community.

The final high-light was turning 21! Mine and my housemates birthday were really close together so we had a joint house party, it was so nice to have all our friends together and celebrate. Although I think I celebrated a little too hard...!

Now onto the not so good, I don't want this to be a negative post but it would be weird doing a year in summary and not mentioning my anxiety as it has had a huge impact.

In the first half of 2013 I was still living the student life. I absolutely loved uni and would encourage everyone to at least give going to uni a try. But the last year of uni was really tough for me. The stress of exams and dissertation really started to kick in and for someone with anxiety that's even harder than for most. I'd been suffering with my anxiety for a while but it got so much worse in the 2nd half of my third year. I haven't spoken too much about this apart from with my closest friends, but everything from going to Sainsburys to attending a lecture just got too much for me.

If you know me at all in real life then you know how much I love Rihanna, I got tickets to go and see her but when the day came round I was stood in tears with my housemate debating not going. My anxiety was stopping me doing everything. I finally went to my doctors who listened as I cried my eyes out and she diagnosed me with severe anxiety bordering on agoraphobia. She told me to apply for CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy, google it if you're not sure what it is!), but the thought of going to a session triggered huge panic attacks. My housemate (the same one who sat outside with me before Rihanna) offered to come with me, and I can't thank her enough because I wouldn't have even made it to one session without her! The session was really good in helping me to understand what anxiety really was and that I wasn't alone. But unfortunately after the first session I moved away from uni back home.

When I was home I was still finding it really hard but because the stress of exams and revision was gone things started to look up. I managed to enjoy my summer like the rest of my friends and I was relatively unaffected by it, until I started my new job. I am unbelievably grateful I managed to find a job so quickly after uni, but it really did trigger my panic attacks. I attended a welcome week type event where we stayed in a hotel and had a massive panic attack and had to rely on two people I barely knew - they were both amazing and dealt with it really well though! But I was so embarrassed and felt like I'd gone backwards.

But I'm so happy to say that now my anxiety really seems to be getting under control, I know part of this is being in a proper routine. Obviously I still have set-backs but it is miles better than it was at the beginning of 2013.

I know that got a little bit heavy towards the end but I hoped you liked reading about my year. I'm hoping that 2014 will not be dominated by anxiety, I don't expect it to disappear but hopefully have less of an impact. I don't really have any other new years resolutions other than the obvious 'keep fit and eat healthy' cliche!

Hope you had a great New Year and good luck in 2014 :)

Aztec Mess in 2013

I thought it would be a nice start to 2014 to look back at how 2013 was for me and Aztec Mess.
This post will be all about my blog!

At the start of the year I started to blog more regularly and really got involved in the blogging community. I saved up to buy a camera and bought myself a Canon 700D, I feel like this made me even more determined to do well on my blog since I'd spent so much money on my camera. My Spain 2013 post was the first one using my new camera, I definitely think it was worth the money and if you think you will keep up blogging then I would recommend getting one. It's great for normal life as well, not just blogging!! I also reached over 400 Bloglovin' followers towards the end of this year which made me really happy, that's so many people!

Some of my favourite and most popular posts from 2013

Some Over-Night Essentials

I slacked on the blogging front in November and December which was a bit rubbish of me. I was finding it difficult to balance blogging, work and normal life! I know it will just take some organisation from me, so I'm going to try my best to get myself together and get back to more regular blogging in 2014.

If you have a blog leave your link in the comments. I want to find some new reads!
Hope the start of 2014 is going well for you all :)

New Years Eve!

Make-up

Outfit
Dress: Topshop // Jewellery: Pandora bracelets, Marc Jacobs watch, all others from Grace & Co // Shoes: Aldo

Food
Starter // Baked Camembert with Ciabatta
Main // Lamb Tagine, Moroccan Salad & Rice
Dessert // Homemade Cheesecake or Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Sauce and/or Fruit Coulis

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you had a great one whether you were out partying or having a nice cosy night in.

I was at my best friends house where we hosted a dinner party for 13 people. It was slightly stressful but was a big success! For some reason I didn't take photos of the baked camembert (probably cause I was too busy devouring it!) but you can see the rest of the food, it was all delicious thanks to Clare who is an excellent cook. I did some grating and stirring but all credit definitely goes to Clare!

We had some champagne to pop at midnight and we tried to dance to Auld Lang Syne, but it wasn't too successful! I went to school with all the people at the party so it was so good to all be re-united. I'm so happy that we've stayed in touch even though we now live all over the country.

Thank you all for reading my blog in 2013, I'll be back in a few days with a re-cap of my year and maybe some New Years resolutions that I probably won't keep!
